Medium and Heavy Truck Sales Up 5% in August

Medium and heavy truck sales were up 5% in August over the same period a year ago and down 3% from last month, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications

Medium and heavy truck sales were up 5% in August over the same period a year ago and down 3% from last month, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications.

Dealers sold 46,718 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds during the month, up from August 2011 (44,328) and down from July 2012 (48,024).

Compared with August 2011, Class 8 trucks were up 9% (16,421, compared to 15,085. Class 7 sales were 4,101, up 8% from the 3,795 sold.

For the year, truck dealers have sold 374,082 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds, up 21% from 309,960 in 2010. Class 8 sales have been 132,164, a 32% increase from the same period last year (100,038). Class 7 sales have been up 16% (32,015, compared to 27,640). Total sales of all classes have been up 11%, from 4,476,425 to 4,965,545.

Every class has been up, except for Class 4 (down 16%) and Class 6 (down 1%). The biggest increase has been in Class 8 (32%).
