Medium and heavy truck sales were up 17% in March over the same period a year ago and up 38% over the previous month, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications.

Dealers sold 33,155 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds during the month, up from March 2009 (28,311) and up from February 2010 (23,397).

Compared with March 2009, Class 8 trucks were up 10% (9,025). Class 7 experienced a 10% increase (3,859).

Through the first three months of 2010, truck dealers sold 80,532 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds, up 11% from the corresponding period of 2009.

Sales of light-duty trucks (GVW ratings of 10,000 pounds or less) were even stronger in March versus a year ago, with Class 1 up 30% and Class 2 up 22%. Total sales were up 27% compared to March 2009 and up 13% for the year.
