TRAILER DEMAND may have slumped in recent years, but the development of new models remains strong, based on what manufacturers had on display at this year's Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Kentucky.

Innovations included a composite platform trailer, an experimental reefer, and new ways to use aluminum extrusions. Other manufacturers who were not demonstrating new models or new technologies displayed significant refinements to existing product lines.

Changes also are on the way for trailer components. Most noticeably, get ready for a big push for air disc brakes for trailers. Several of the industry's leading brake system suppliers have air disc brakes that have been used successfully in Europe and are ready to introduce North American versions in the coming months.

And if the Mid-America show is any indication, we can expect increased popularity in LEDs as lighting manufacturers continue to refine light-emitting diodes for use on truck bodies and trailers.

The pages that follow are some of the highlights from this year's show.
