United States machine tool consumption in April 2001 totaled $180.37 million, according to AMTDA, the American Machine Tool Distributors' Association, and AMT — The Association for Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the United States Machine Tool Consumption program, dropped 38.6% from March and fell 39.2% from the total of $296.81 million reported for April 2000. With a year-to-date total of $906.80 million, 2001's figures have declined 33.4% compared with the same period in 2000.

Consumption is also reported for these US regions:

  • Northeast — April consumption stood at $26.54 million, a 46.1% decrease from March's $49.28 million, and a 48.8% drop when compared with April 2000. Year-to-date consumption totaled $170.28 million, 27.4% below the comparable figure in 2000.

  • Southern — Totaling $24.67 million, April consumption was 39.0% below the $40.47 million tallied in March, and down 38.4% from April 2000's total. With a year-to-date total of $113.60 million, 2001 is 40.9% behind the comparable period of 2000.

  • Midwestern — Consumption in April stood at $54.53 million, a 49.9% loss compared with the $108.90 million for March, and a 48.5% decline compared with April 2000. At $307.17 million, year-to-date consumption fell 38.6% from the comparable figure for 2000.

  • Central — At $39.61 million, April consumption was 31.9% below the $58.17 million for March, and down 28.3% when compared with April 2000. Year-to-date consumption stood at $177.03 million, a 24.1% drop compared with the same period of 2000.

  • Western — Consumption totaled $35.02 million, a 4.9% dip compared with the $36.82 million for March and a 20.1% fall compared with April 2000. With a year-to-date total of $138.72 million, 2001 has slid 30.9% compared with the same period in 2000.
