July Machine Tool Consumption Goes Up

July 2000 machine tool consumption in the United States totaled an estimated $511 million, according to AMTDA, the American Machine Tool Distributors'

July 2000 machine tool consumption in the United States totaled an estimated $511 million, according to AMTDA, the American Machine Tool Distributors' Association, and AMT- The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This was up 3% compared with the revised estimate of $498 million for June, and up 18% compared with an estimated $433 million for July 1999. With the year-to-date total computed at $3.4 billion, 2000 is 5.8% higher than the same period in 1999. Statistics are computed from reports submitted by companies participating in the United States Machine Tool Consumption (USMTC) report.

Machine tool consumption is also reported for five regions:

- Northeast - July machine tool consumption stood at $54.62 million, a 12.5% drop compared with June's $62.42 million, but an 18.4% rise compared with July 1999. Year-to-date machine tool consumption totaled $416.52 million, 9.3% higher than in the comparable period a year ago.

- Southern - At $80.54 million, July machine tool consumption increased 35.9% compared with June's $59.26 million, and surged 59.5% compared with July 1999. Year-to-date machine tool consumption rose to $403.95 million, 5.4% higher than the 1999 total for the same period.

- Midwestern - Machine tool consumption in July totaled $141.72 million, 5% above the $134.97 million for June, and 2.7% higher than July 1999's total. At $972.68 million, the year-to-date total is down 6.6% compared with the same period a year ago.

- Central - Totaling $57.07 million, July machine tool consumption dipped 5.4% compared with the $60.32 million for June, but rose 10.8% compared with July 1999. At $421.56 million, year-to-date machine tool consumption is 4.8% ahead of 1999 at the same time.

- Western - Machine tool consumption in July stood at $54.78 million, a 10.5% decline compared with June's $61.22 million, but a 28.1% increase compared with July 1999. With a year-to-date total of $373.61 million, 2000 machine tool consumption is 56.5% higher than the comparable figure for 1999.
