Greatwide Logistics Services has announced that the firm has acquired Southpoint Distributing Inc, a privately held, dedicated contract carriage company. Based in Winter Haven, Florida and Auburn, Georgia, Southpoint provides dedicated contract carriage services from grocery distribution centers to retail supermarkets. The acquisition will immediately provide Greatwide with a significant increase in geographic coverage and services within the southeastern United States, a top priority in the company’s growth plans.

Founded in 1984 by Jack Johns, Southpoint Distributing reported revenues in excess of $50 million in 2005 and is experiencing substantial growth in 2006. With 275 employees, Southpoint lists Publix Super Markets as its largest customer. Publix is the largest and fastest growing employee-owned supermarket chain in the United States. The founder's sons, Doug Johns and Jeff Johns will remain active in the company in a senior management capacity.

The operations of Southpoint will be integrated into those of Greatwide’s Dedicated Transport segment, one of four primary lines of business in which the company operates. Other Greatwide business groups include Distribution Logistics, Truckload Management and Truckload Brokerage.
