The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has unveiled the first four installments of a new series of interactive educational CD-ROMs. This new series merges manufacturing video footage, graphics and animation, testing, and glossaries through an interface. The first four CDs are:

  • Turning and Lathe Basics(item #PI-CD638), which provides lessons and testing in the engine lathe, lathe types, work loading, tool arrangements, lathe operations, and process variables. It includes tests for each section and a glossary of terms.

  • Milling and Machining Center Basics (item #PI-CD639) offers lessons in the knee mill, machining center, milling cutters and operations, work-holding, work-changing, and operations parameters.

  • Basic Holemaking (item #PI-CD640) includes lessons in the drill, drill types, machines for holemaking, operating parameters, and hole-finishing operations.

  • Basics of Grinding (item #PI-CD641) contains lessons and testing in abrasives and grinding wheels; grinding safety; balancing, truing, and dressing; cylindrical grinding; centerless grinding; internal diameter grinding; surface grinding; and workpiece surface finishing.
