The “Chrome Shop” at Southern States Utility in Jackson MS specializes in selling parts to make trucks and trailers shine.Southern States rebuilt the cab of a Peterbilt tractor to showcase some of the chrome parts that the company has for sale.Southern States refurbished the Peterbilt cab inside and out.Even custom logos are possible.
An unusual feature of the trailer-themed parts counter is a rear that opens to reveal graphics as well as the door seals for Utility refrigerated trailers.Eight operating air-ride seats are part of the display. The company also sells souvenir T-shirts that promote its chrome shop.The 14,000-sq-ft warehouse gets extra capacity from the triple-deck rack system with over 800 pallet positions.Dual loading docks, including a recessed dock for forklift loading, simplify the work in the shipping and receiving department.
The new shop has 17 bays. A bridge crane does the heavy lifting for the entire shop.Southern States is the only shop in the area that installs chrome accessories.The trailer service shop foreman and the Carrier service shop foreman share this office area that is placed in the middle of the shop.One of Percy Thornton’s wishes was for something he did not have at his previous location—an office with a window. His second-floor office doubles as a conference room.
